The Affiliate Training and Assessment Programme extends The Royal Ballet School’s System of Training to recreational dance teachers, driving forward the standard of recreational dance training and keeping pace with the changing needs of the art form.

The Affiliate Training and Assessment Programme, is a holistic approach to the learning of dance, where as well as performance skills, students will learn about the art form as a whole: repertoire, choreography, and appreciation. This will enable students to understand the language of dance by relating what they learn to the diversity of the art from past and current repertoire.

The programme is based on providing high-quality training and not on student examination. Student progress is benchmarked through assessment material devised by teachers for their own students, not a pre-set syllabus.

The training is split into 4 main areas:

  • Ballet vocabulary - new steps and skills delivered in way that they can really understand.

  • Body awareness & conditioning - fun exercises to improve their balance, co-ordination, stamina and power.

  • Creative practice - choreography, improvisation, developing their musicality and artistry.

  • Repertoire study - unique access to the Royal Opera House’s rich history in ballet, opportunity to study the stories behind the ballets.

This programme is a refreshing break from an examination syllabus. Students are assessed at the end of each Level, and the results are moderated by the expert team at The Royal Ballet School.

The Royal Ballet School recommend a minimum of 100 training hours at each level, with only 10 of those hours spent preparing material for assessment.
